The Entwined Histories mosaic sculpture was designed to celebrate the many immigrant communities that settled in the Poplar area of East London. It is on the site of a former major rope makers that produced ropes for the London docks, which lead to the settling of the varied immigrant communities throughout the history of the area.
Each strand of the rope sculpture represents a different community through their own textile patterns, from a medieval Damask Islamic influenced William Morris patter to Huguenot Lace from the 17th century, Irish Linen from the 18th century, textiles from the African, Bengali, Chinese, Eastern European and Ashkenazi Jewish traditions.
The strands weave together to represent the community that is Poplar and Bow in East London today, each strengthened by the other and ending by facing out to the world, showing a golden core.
