Sign trays are constructed from durable 3mm aluminium sheet with folded returns to each edge (usually 25–75mm depending upon overall size), to create a 3-dimensional sign. Corners are welded for strength and dressed to give a smooth surface before having a durable, coloured powder-coated finish applied. All but the smallest A4, A3 and A2 sign trays can be wall- or post-mounted.

Graphics are applied using one of two possible methods, depending upon the complexity of the design required. Simpler signs consisting of lettering plus limited graphic elements (for example a single logo) are carried out using computer-cut vinyl lettering, whilst more complicated designs incorporating multiple logos, large logos or areas of varying tone and colour, may be digitally-printed onto vinyl before being applied to the front face of the sign tray. The latter technique also lends itself to the application of an anti-graffiti laminate in instances where this is deemed to be prudent.

Aluminium sign trays are available in a wide range of standard sizes from A4 up to 1800 x 1200mm, with the majority of sizes also offering a choice of shapes. Non-standard shapes and sizes can also be quoted for.
