The Hydro Biofilter™ bioretention system captures stormwater runoff and naturally treats the pollutants. It significantly improves upon traditional bioretention and biofilter designs by combining specialist engineered media with shrubs or trees to provide enhanced bioretention and biofiltration in a kerbside device.

The advanced design requires 90-95% less land-take than traditional bioretention and provides higher levels of treatment for phosphorus and nitrogen, two of the most environmentally damaging causes of nutrient pollution.

Full containment of the root ball within the concrete chamber minimises the risk of surface bulging or cracking due to root penetration. The use and full containment of inherited soil within the sealed system means that the Hydro Biofilter™ can be safely used on contaminated or brownfield sites.

A variety of different shrubs or trees may be used within the Hydro Biofilter™ system which not only facilitate the treatment process but also allow designers the option to change the aesthetics, integrating the system into the surrounding environment and adding value to the urban landscape.

Hydro StormTrain® Series

The Hydro Biofilter™ is part of the Hydro StormTrain® Series of surface water treatment devices, a comprehensive toolbox for silt, sediment and pollutant removal as part of SuDS.

The Hydro StormTrain® Series comprises four products, First Defense®, Downstream Defender®, The Up-Flo™ Filter and Hydro Biofilter™ that can be used independently or in combination to deliver a Treatment Train that meets the water quality stipulations of a site. They can also be used to protect, enhance or enable natural SuDS features such as ponds or attenuation tanks.
