Gordon Low provided an EPDM liner for a wildlife lake at The Wildwood Estate in the Surrey Hills. The project, managed by Fairwater Ltd, converted a 7,000m² irrigation reservoir into a wildlife habitat. The original reservoir was five metres deep and featured steep sides without shallow margins, making it unsuitable for wildlife in the heathland location. The redesign addressed ecological and planning requirements while providing a functional feature for the development.

Fairwater worked with ecologists and site engineers to reshape the lake using surplus on-site soil. This created graduated slopes and shallow edges. The design provides habitat zones for plants, amphibians, birds, and insects, converting the functional reservoir into an ecological feature.

Gordon Low's EPDM liner provides a waterproofing membrane while allowing for natural habitat establishment. The material's durability and flexibility suit the application's long-term requirements. The approach reduced material waste by using on-site soil and minimised off-site disposal.

The lake was filled through rainfall, with the EPDM-lined lake developing into a self-sustaining ecosystem over time. It functions as an ecological feature at The Wildwood Estate, demonstrating the conversion of a conventional reservoir into a thriving wildlife habitat through careful planning and design.
