Background

Lancaster Civic Society secured funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) under the 'Streets Are Ours' initiative (Intervention E1) to enhance town centres and high streets. This project aimed to create high-quality, accessible public spaces, improving experiences and open spaces for residents and visitors.

While improving town centres is a community priority, council resources typically focus on maintaining current standards. The UKSPF E1 funds presented an opportunity to exceed these standards. Consequently, Lancaster City Council partnered with HAGS to design and install a bespoke modular seating solution that enhances the stunning Sun Square in the heart of Lancaster.

Project detail

Lancaster City Council selected HAGS for its established reputation and successful past collaborations. Familiar with the quality and reliability of the company's play equipment, the Council was confident in its ability to deliver. The project team sought a modern, innovative approach to street furniture that would respect the historic and conservation constraints of Sun Square. The Rosenlund range, with its modern, Scandi-inspired design, perfectly met these requirements. The furniture was designed to be accessible for individuals using mobility aids and to discourage anti-social behaviour, blending functionality with style.

From start to finish, the project team's experience with HAGS was overwhelmingly positive. Jilly Saunders, a key representative from HAGS, played a crucial role in understanding and realising Sun Square's vision. Her thorough approach and meticulous attention to detail ensured that all key requirements were met within budget constraints. The final street furniture arrangement from HAGS not only suited the location perfectly but also set a benchmark for future projects to adopt more innovative design approaches.
