Context
Greenfix was contacted by the community team at Westonbirt Arboretum who were designing and building a new community shelter within the Arboretum.
The shelter will be used to provide a space for activities and projects organised for young people, rehabilitation groups, older adults, and people with additional needs. The community groups and volunteers that will benefit from the shelter were heavily involved in the design working with award winning architect Piers Taylor.
Challenge
Due to the location of the shelter deep within the Arboretum, the team at Westonbirt identified the need for a tree root protection system.
Solution
Following discussions with the team at Greenfix, the company was able to donate the complete Geoweb® tree root protection system, which included the 100mm-deep Geoweb® panels, Atra® Key connection device, and geotextile.
Work on the new community shelter was finally able to start in September 2020.
The surface was cleared by a team of Westonbirt volunteers allowing Greenfix to commence work with one of the Westonbirt Community groups, The Apperley Centre, a college that supports young adults with additional behaviour and care requirements. During the course of the day the participants learnt about the Geoweb® system and the importance of protecting tree roots from compaction. It was a great success with a large area of Geoweb® being installed during the day.
Outcome
The Geoweb® installation has since been completed with HRH The Duchess of Cornwall paying a visit to the construction site during her recent visit to the arboretum. She was very interested in the shelter project and impressed at how the community groups had been working together in the design and construction process. Greenfix is proud to play a part in this fantastic project which should bring so much joy to the people using the shelter on its completion.
