Geoweb solution for Scarborough slope stabilisation
Work has been completed by Balfour Beatty on a £16 million scheme to stabilise the cliff between Scarborough Spa and the Esplanade on Scarborough’s South Cliff.
The South Cliff Slope Stabilisation Scheme involved piling along the rear of Scarborough’s Spa complex with almost horizontal drainage to address the deep seated failure of the slope, soil reinforcement (‘nailing’) and re-grading of the slope to address shallow and medium seated instabilities.
The product solution
Revegetation, soil erosion protection and covering of most of the 4,585 soil reinforcement nails was achieved by using the Geoweb® geocell soil retention system, utilising the patented ATRA® tendons and ATC system. The 150mm deep Geoweb® cells were secured to the slope without the requirement for pins or anchors ensuring a fast and safe installation method for the CAN Ltd installers on slopes up to 60 degrees.
Over 3600 tons of topsoil was placed into the cells by CAN Ltd, which was then sprayed with grass seed via hydroseeding.
The outcome
The complex engineering scheme, project managed by Royal HaskoningDHV, and carried out by contractor, Balfour Beatty, on behalf of Scarborough Borough Council, has resulted in the "protection of 380 homes and 38 key businesses with a combined value of £114 million".
