Context

A new attenuation lagoon was created as part of flood alleviation works at Chipping Sodbury. The sides of the lagoon are sealed with an innovative self-healing geosynthetic clay liner made from bentonite.

The clay liner lacked no organic matter and had very little nutrients, making it difficult to sustain plant life. New vegetation was urgently required to address the risk of erosion. However, due to the time of year the required seeding works were outside the traditional sowing season.

Solution

Winter-Active seed mix with organic fertiliser was applied at the 4,000m² site and, within a few weeks the seeds had begun to germinate.

Ultimately the mix will protect the sides of the lagoon from erosion by helping slow rainwater run-off and forming a dense root mass to hold the wet soil together.
