A £6 million development in Barclay Street, Glasgow by Loretto Housing includes 49 homes for social rent, and a mix of flats and houses, with four of the flats suitable for wheelchairs.

Work undertaken

Phi Group was contracted for the design, supply and installation of 15 retaining walls at the site for McTaggart Construction.

  • 14 Permacrib BBA-certified timber crib wall systems
  • 1 Titan modular block-faced reinforced soil system

The site layout meant that some of the walls were situated between plots, which made sequencing with other trades on site very important to minimise disruption.

The works on site were undertaken in two phases:

  • Phase 1: consisted of 11 Permacrib timber crib walls with a face area of nearly 700 square metres and maximum retained height of 3.50m. There was also a small Titan reinforced soil wall required on this phase of works.
  • Phase 2: consisted of 3 Permacrib walls with a face area of 325 square metres and maximum retained height of 3.35m.

Fencing detail

Of particular interest on this project is the fencing detail specified by the architect, Page\Park. This resulted in fences leaning back at the same angle as the Permacrib structures. It gives a striking finish to the Permacrib walls, and is a detail that is now regularly offered to clients.
