Context

A gabion retaining wall was supplied and installed for David Wilson Homes at their Thurstan's Rise project in Coleford, situated in the Forest of Dean.

The gabion wall supports the edge of a balancing pond with a historic hedge which needed to be preserved. The original design carried out by another gabion specialist showed the structure encroaching on this hedge so was deemed unbuildable. EMG Construction Ltd, the groundworker on the project, asked Phi Group to find a solution for this area of site.

Work undertaken

After discussions with both EMG and David Wilson Homes, a suitable design was developed and an instruction issued to Phi Group for the design, supply and installation.

The gabion wall, built using welded mesh gabions, is over 100m long with a maximum retained height approaching 3.0m.

Phi Group mobilised quickly using their large pool of labour resources, and the project was completed on time and on budget.
