Place Verte, in the centre of Charleroi, Belgium reopened in March 2017 after several years of redevelopment work. This included the grand opening of the Rive Gauche 39,000m2 commercial centre which hosts 95 shops spread over 3 levels.
Charlie cast stone benches, designed by MSA and manufactured by URBASTYLE, have been installed within the site for shoppers to rest on, while long seats and Galet benches line the docks along the River Sambre linking it to the busy commercial city centre.
The architect for Rive Gauche was DDS & Partners.
The cast stone Charlie bench sits 4 people. The surface is slightly sloped meaning rainwater runs off, and litter cannot easily be left on it. Its rounded angles also make it very attractive.
The design includes a space under the seat to enable people with physical difficulties to easily stand up. Its base is also noticeable with a white stick so there is no hazard for visually impaired people.
