What is Meadowmat?
Meadowmat is an innovative UK-grown product that facilitates the quick and easy establishment of wildflowers. A mixture of wildflower plants is grown from seed onto a slimline matting system. To install the mat, simply unroll it onto prepared ground - in much the same way as lawn turf.
Meadowmat is supplied with at least 75% plant coverage.
About Meadowmat Woodland Shade
Meadowmat Woodland Shade incorporates 34 species of UK-native wildflowers and 4 native grass species all of which like to grow in dappled shade. These are all plants that naturally grow in woods, copses and hedgerows so they are naturally adapted to lower light levels.
Harrowden Turf's Research and Development team has selected plant species that will provide attractive colour and form throughout the spring and summer months.

The seed used to propagate Meadowmat Woodland Shade comes from sustainable sources in the UK.
Perennial plants
Meadowmat Woodland Shade is perennial - meaning the plants continue to grow every year. Provided the soil and light conditions are right and the correct management regime is followed, there is no need to re-plant or re-seed every year.
Biodiversity
Meadowmat Woodland Shade is all about encouraging biodiversity. By offering a long flowering period, insects that feed on pollen and nectar have a continual source of food for several months of the year. Some of the plant species have been included, not for their beautiful flowers but because they are laval food plants for butterflies. The long grasses provide shelter for insects, food for birds and mammals and safe resting places for bugs. In the bottom of the sward where conditions are cool and damp you will find beetles, slugs, snails, and even snakes or amphibians.
Using Meadowmat is a great way to earn BREEAM points.
Management
Once installed, the mats need to be kept moist until the roots are well established. The sward can then be left to grow and flower.
Cut back in late autumn / early winter and remove all of the clippings. Do not add fertiliser - these plants hate nutrient-rich soil.
