The Apple Shelter was Handspring Design's first structure, and is still the most popular amongst users. The pieces have been installed mainly in schools, parks, urban locations and NHS sites.

15 years after the first commission was made, the form remains the same while the manufacturing process is completely different. Now, the shelter is constructed from steam-bent, glue-laminated English oak with a hard oil finish. Fixings are stainless steel.

It is handmade at Handspring Design's workshop in Sheffield, and can be created to suit the requirements of the setting.

It is 3.2m high x 3m wide and requires no foundations, therefore it can be located on hard-standing or grass. The 12-ribbed structure, with vaulted roof, can seat and shelter up to 20 adults or a whole classroom of children, around its sculptural core.

Apple comes complete with a 'leaf and stalk' weather vane, and flooring.

Commissions

Handspring Design's was commissioned to create an Apple shelter for a school in Essex where a student had been tragically killed in a freak accident during PE.

The school was looking for a fitting memorial to her and found the Apple shelter. Handspring built the shelter with a bespoke dedication plaque that sits in the doorway. The shelter was opened with a dedication service attended by the whole school.
