River embankment adjacent to the A484 Gresford, Wales
The A484 Gresford bypass was constructed along a fast flowing tributary river with a potential to swell. The river was particularly erosive at the bends along its route. To counteract the problem, Grass Concrete was asked to assist with a suitable design for ground reinstatement works. The A484 Gresford bypass was constructed along a fast flowing tributary river with a potential to swell. The river was particularly erosive at the bends along its route.
At one point, much of the road bund had been washed away during heavy flooding, to the extent that passing toe restraint was in danger of being lost.
Solution
To counteract the problem, Grass Concrete was asked to assist with a suitable design for ground reinstatement works.
Lost earthwork was replaced with local stone of low fines content, and formed to a gradient of 1 in 2.1/2. A toe beam was then constructed with a rip-rap, introduced at a low water mark to slow the rate of flow.
A geotextile was laid and the stone infill blinded with sand, ready to receive cast in situ Grasscrete GC1 (100mm thick), with a flow rate of 6m per second.
Outcome
Grasscrete was successful at reinstating the natural environment, and created a structure that enabled the release of hydro-static pressure.
