Challenge
The A696 Ponteland to Otterburn project involved the widening of the road at key points along the route.
Located close to the British Army's Otterburn range, the road is the primary route for artillery carrying vehicles and needs to be able to withstand heavy loads, as well as blend in with the natural surroundings. Taking these factors into consideration, a grass paver with a coloured concrete (brown) was identified as the best solution.
Solution
The project commenced using a precast grass and concrete block system. Early on, load-bearing difficulties were encountered and the bulk of the work shifted to using cast-on-site, fully reinforced Grasscrete®.
Grasscrete® Type GC2sc was selected using 10mm diameter (A393) mesh reinforcement. The brown pigmentation was achieved using colour in the mix supplied by Hanson Pre-Mix Ltd.
