Challenge

Jacksons was approached by Osborne to create a secure and safe access control solution for the student campus at West Thames College in London.

Redevelopment work at the college included the opening of a new Atrium Building; the Joseph Banks Building, which houses science labs, art and design studios and IT suites; and an on-site nursery to provide childcare facilities for students.

It was important that, as well as ensuring security, the system had a smart aesthetic appearance.

Solution

Barbican Imperial gates and matching Barbican Imperial security railings were chosen for the entrance and the nursery building.

Two 1.5m high Barbican Imperial gates were installed next to the dedicated security hut at the entrance for added reassurance. The gates for the nursery building were designed for manual control, with one of them designed to work in conjunction with an intercom system.

EuroGuard regular welded mesh panels and matching gates were fitted to the other two sides of the nursery. Bespoke cranked post fitting were used to blend with the wall heights.

The garden to the nursery was contained using tubular chain link system 3 fencing and a matching gate.

Rebound sports mesh fencing and complementing gates with double wire were installed to 3m high around the new grassed sports pitch.

The Sir Joseph Banks Building was surrounded by timber Hit and Miss fencing, with enhanced security and restricted access control from three automated and manual, solid courtyard gates. The gates were made to match the widths of the walls on site, and a bespoke set of railings to match the existing steel facade college frontage was also supplied.

Finishing touches included featherboard fence panels to create a boundary line for the residential housing adjacent to the college, preventing access to the Japanese knotweed plants using a chestnut paling surround and timber Hit and Miss fencing, and gates to control access to the old air raid shelter and steel staircase void.
