Challenge

Jacksons Fencing was contracted to supply high security boundary fencing for Tarling Community Centre in Shadwell, London.

After the fencing installations were finished, the client contacted Jacksons again with a proposal to create a structure to prevent balls being thrown over the top of the fence.

The key challenge was to create a strong and durable roofing system that would not interfere with the main structure and would not sag at any point over the 19x16.5m ball court.

Solution

For the initial contract, Jacksons supplied Barbican square pale security railings to create a boundary around the centre and Anti-Trap bow top railings for around the play area.

Jacksons Anti-Trap bow top railings are RoSPA approved and conform to all current play area safety guidelines (BS EN 1176). They have wider gaps between the pales to prevent children from getting their heads, necks or limbs stuck.

The company also created a 4.4m high EuroGuard Ball Court with welded mesh, vandal proof panels with anti-climb properties. 

To create the roof for the ball court, Jacksons installed posts to support the roofing system away from the original ball court posts. The structure was designed to a much larger scale to prevent the tensioning wires bending or twisting under the load and to ensure it did not interfere with the ball court.

The precise size and location of the posts and wires used proved to be pivotal to the success of the overall installation. The final netting roof structure was installed in June 2010 and increased the overall height of the ball court to 5.5m.
