Challenge

Factory Furniture was commissioned to design and manufacture a new feature seating arrangement for Letchworth town centre.

The design was initially conceived in its basic form by LDA Design: a 4.5m-long bench with back and arms, tapering to a 500mm-wide base.

The seats needed to complement the surrounding 1920's architecture, with bronze being the preferred material.

Solution

The price rise in raw materials and the lead-in time forced Factory Furniture to reconsider the material and opt for LM6 aluminium as a cheaper alternative.

At the time, the design was very difficult to achieve due to the restrictions on the crucible size at most foundries, together with the excessive size of what was a very refined and slender shape.

The design was eventually realised by casting the components separately then welding the items together, followed by fettling and then finally powder coating.

The design and manufacture of the frame was technically demanding and demonstrates Factory Furniture's complete commitment to fulfilment of the design brief.
