Cornelly Community Council secured grant funding to develop an outdoor gym zone within Cornelly Community Park, Bridgend County Borough. The project was delivered by Fresh Air Fitness. The facility provides free, accessible fitness provision for local residents and supports local health initiatives in the area.
Background
The council applied to the Community Feasibility Fund to develop Cornelly Community Park. Following this, a Resilient Communities Capital Grant was secured.
Fresh Air Fitness was selected to design and install the outdoor gym, with the aim of enhancing both mental and physical health outcomes for the community and offering accessible fitness opportunities to residents of all abilities.
Project Objectives
The council identified a number of objectives:
Provide free, accessible exercise opportunities outdoors
Improve community health and wellbeing
Support individuals who may not attend a traditional gym
Create space suitable for rehabilitation, mobility work and general fitness
The project also needed to support local health initiatives, including Project Malcolm - a programme in which community members and students work together to improve their fitness and health.
The Installation
Fresh Air Fitness designed and installed a fully accessible outdoor gym capable of accommodating up to 14 users. The facility offers a complete full-body workout and is suitable for users of all abilities.
The installation includes a range of cardio, strength, resistance, flexibility and balance equipment. Among the equipment featured are the Resistance Bike and Resistance Arm Bike.
The gym is installed with all-weather surfacing, allowing it to remain open to the public 24 hours a day, seven days a week, across all seasons. Use of the facility is entirely free of charge.
To mark the opening, the Fresh Air Fitness team attended a dedicated launch event and provided live equipment demonstrations.
Client Feedback
"Fresh Air Fitness delivered a highly professional service and maintained excellent communication with us throughout the duration of the project."
Judy Murphy, Council Clerk, Cornelly Community Council
"During the installation phase, their team worked efficiently, conducted themselves professionally at all times, and left the site in an excellent condition on completion."
Judy Murphy, Council Clerk, Cornelly Community Council
"The consistent and ongoing use of the outdoor gym is a clear indication of its value and popularity within the local community, even with the local college using it to train people as part of one of their assignments. We would have no hesitation in recommending Fresh Air Fitness to other organisations or community groups considering the development of an outdoor gym facility in their area."
Judy Murphy, Council Clerk, Cornelly Community Council
