Refurbished Velo-Safe lockers get a new lease of life at Newcaste Uni
Cycle-Works delivered a sustainability-focused installation at Newcastle University's Bowsden Court Student Accommodation - choosing to refurbish and repurpose existing stock rather than manufacture new units.
The Project
Fifteen Velo-Safe cycle lockers were refurbished by Cycle-Works and installed at the student accommodation site. Rather than procuring new lockers, the decision was made to give existing units a second life a choice that aligned cost efficiency with environmental responsibility.
Outcomes
The project delivered across four areas:
Waste reduction - The lockers were repurposed rather than discarded, keeping usable infrastructure out of the waste stream.
Cost efficiency - Refurbishing existing units proved more economical than buying new, offering the university better value.
Improved student facilities - Students at Bowsden Court now benefit from secure, individual bike storage on site, supporting cycling as a sustainable transport option.
Why It Matters
This project is a practical illustration of how institutions can meet real infrastructure needs through refurbishment rather than replacement.
