DLF Colour Boost Brings Burst of Colour to Lees Hall Golf Club

Lees Hall Golf Club is celebrating the success of a growing wildflower initiative developed in partnership with DLF Seeds. Now entering its third year, the programme has added areas of high visual impact to the course while delivering a significant boost to on-site biodiversity.

Background

Founded in 1907 and expanded to 18 holes in 1921, Lees Hall Golf Club is a parkland course located in Sheffield. Head Greenkeeper Ian Whitehead and Assistant Greenkeeper Danny Tozzi have led the wildflower project, working closely with the DLF Seeds team.

Year one trial

Following a meeting with DLF in 2024, the club began with a small-scale trial using Floral Carpet from the Colour Boost range. The mixture provided bold floral planting near the first tee that maintained sightlines and was well received by members. At the club's request, DLF adjusted the mixture to feature more blues and whites rather than red, a nod to Head Greenkeeper Ian Whitehead's support for Sheffield Wednesday.

Year 2 expansion

Building on the trial's success, the programme was expanded under Danny Tozzi's management with support from DLF's Ben Morgan. The Honey Bee & Butterfly mixture was introduced into new areas alongside the continued use of Floral Carpet. Despite some difficult weather conditions, both the new sowings and re-growth from year-one plots performed strongly.

Ecological Impact

Since the wildflower areas were established, the team has observed a clear increase in pollinators, birds, and wildlife across the course.

Looking Ahead

Five additional wildflower areas are planned for 2026, with Floral Carpet, Honey Bee & Butterfly, and Carnival all set to feature.
