Context

Hydro International's Downstream Defender® stormwater separator helped Swindon Borough Council to improve Junction 16 of the M4, while protecting the environment from surface water pollution.

Challenge

As part of a project to improve local access to drive economic development, Swindon Borough Council needed to carry out a major overhaul to junction 16 of the M4 motorway.

UK construction regulations require infrastructure development projects such as roadbuilding to conform with water quality legislation derived from the EU Water Framework Directive. As such, the project needed to protect the environment from stormwater pollution. 

Solution

Designers chose the Downstream Defender® stormwater separator to deliver reliable surface water pollution capture, and Hydro International's engineering experts worked with MJ Church Civil Engineering to refine and optimise the construction details to ensure that adjustments to the design maintained required performance levels and kept installation and construction on schedule. 

Outcome

Support from Hydro International's team enabled MJ Church to deliver a stormwater treatment system that maintained the designed standard of environmental protection without adversely affecting costs or schedules.

The new junction improved both road safety and traffic flow.
