Street Furnishings LTD  was commissioned to supply from their  Traditional Cast Bollards—a highly visible boundary solution—Gloucestershire Council (SGC) to clearly delineate and secure its new green cycle lane infrastructure across the Bristol region.

To physically separate these new green-coloured cycleways from vehicular traffic while maintaining a traditional streetscape appearance, the council selected the Manchester PU Bollard (a cast polyurethane bollard with a steel core) supplied by Street Furnishings Ltd.

Product Features Chosen

  • Classic “Manchester” heritage design in white finish for high visibility

  • Manufactured from engineering-grade cast polyurethane over a steel core ? extremely durable, impact-resistant, and virtually maintenance-free compared to traditional cast iron

  • Factory-fitted recessed sign bosses accepting 150 mm diameter circular blue mandatory signs showing the shared pedestrian/cyclist symbol

  • The combination of bright white bollards + official blue signage legally designates the route as a shared active travel path and provides a clear, unmistakable boundary

Outcome

The installation successfully:

  • Physically protects the new green cycle lanes

  • Clearly delineates shared-use zones with mandatory signage

  • Enhances night-time visibility and overall road safety

  • Blends modern active travel infrastructure with traditional street aesthetics

This project is a great example of how councils can deliver functional, legally compliant cycle/path segregation without resorting to plastic flexi-bollards or purely modern designs, by using high-quality polyurethane replicas of classic cast-iron bollards fitted with integral signage.
