Context

In summer 2025, eibe Play completed the redevelopment of the iconic pirate-themed play area at Cliff Park, Dovercourt - known locally as Pirate Ship Park. Commissioned by Tendring District Council, this project involved replacing the well-loved but ageing Spielart pirate ship with a bold new centrepiece, built to inspire generations of play, along with nautical-themed safety surfacing.

Brief

The Council’s brief was clear: design and install a robust, high-quality, fully themed pirate ship play unit that retained the original footprint (approx. 11 x 10m), used natural Robinia timber, and maximised play value for children aged 6 to 12. Durability, inclusivity and imaginative play were key criteria, with a strong emphasis on designing for long-term community impact.

Work undertaken

After an in-depth site survey and community-focused planning phase, eibe developed a bespoke pirate ship that not only honoured the legacy of the previous structure but expanded its possibilities. Designed for up to 50 simultaneous users, the play unit uses every inch of available space with varied play zones above, below and around the ship.

The new pirate ship includes a broad spectrum of play elements that promote physical, social, emotional and imaginative development.

Key features

  • Climbing nets, ladders and boulder walls: offering multiple climbing options that help children develop coordination, strength and resilience.

  • Slides and a Pirate’s Pole: providing fast-paced, exhilarating movement that encourages repeated use and cooperation through turn-taking.

  • Wobble bridge and deck platforms: designed to promote balance, interaction and group engagement through physical challenge and shared exploration.

  • Below-deck and shaded spaces: ideal for social and sensory play, these provide quieter environments and inclusive access to movement-based features like the hammock swing.

  • Interactive elements: helm wheels, telescopes and lookout portals encourage cognitive development, problem-solving and immersive role play.

  • Inclusive surfacing: themed wetpour surfacing not only enhances the aesthetic (complete with treasure map graphics and sea colours), but also ensures safe, accessible play for all children.

Robinia timber was chosen for its durability in the coastal environment, natural texture and visual appeal. The equipment meets EN 1176 and EN 1177 standards and includes long-term warranties: 15 years on timber; 5 years on surfacing; and 12 months on installation.

Outcome

By completing the installation and RPII inspection ahead of the May 23rd deadline, eibe ensured that Cliff Park was ready for a full summer of play. The new pirate ship has already become a landmark within the Green Flag-awarded park, attracting families and increasing engagement with local outdoor spaces.

Beyond play value, eibe’s solution supports social inclusion and community identity. The modular design allows for future expansion, while eibe’s ongoing inspection support and maintenance packages ensure long-term safety and quality.

Through creative design, technical expertise and a strong customer partnership, eibe Play has delivered a transformational new play environment that reinforces Cliff Park’s reputation as a treasured community space on the Essex coastline.
