Challenge

Benchmark designed, manufactured and installed bespoke outdoor tables and seating to withstand the elements and high foot traffic outside the University of Southampton’s new Jubilee Sports Centre.

One of the primary challenges was creating freestanding furniture that would remain stable without being permanently fixed to the ground. Since the sports centre’s outdoor spaces would be highly trafficked, the furniture needed to be heavy enough to resist tipping or moving while still being functional and comfortable.

The furniture needed to match the architectural style of the new sports centre, be functional, and adhere to a specific budget. The client requested a range of furniture, including freestanding curved benches, round tables and individual stools.

Solution

With functionality, durability and aesthetics as top priorities, Benchmark designed a suite of street furniture that would integrate well into the modern, vibrant atmosphere of this new building

The materials chosen were galvanised steel, powder-coated for protection, paired with FSC-certified Iroko hardwood, a durable and sustainable timber ideal for external use.

The curved benches were designed to encourage group interaction and create flexible seating arrangements offering both comfort and visual continuity. The radius was perfectly designed to follow the curves of the round tables allowing multiple combinations depending on the group size.

Outcome

The final furniture pieces were delivered and installed at the Jubilee Sports Centre on time and within budget. The curved benches, round tables and individual stools created flexible, inviting outdoor spaces for students, staff and visitors to relax, socialise or study.

The University of Southampton expressed its satisfaction with the project’s outcome, noting the high-quality finish and durability of the furniture.The successful completion of this project added value to the outdoor spaces at the Sports Centre, enhancing the overall user experience with functional, durable and attractive furniture.
