Context
Chris Nangle Furniture, a leading designer and maker of handcrafted outdoor pieces, designed and manufactured a collection of bespoke furniture for the roof terrace at the spectacular Plant building in Basingstoke, a redevelopment of the iconic Mountbatten House.
Work undertaken
Working with Studio Knight Stokoe, the project involved designing and creating a family of furniture tailored specifically for the terraced rooftop gardens - a space affectionately known as the "hanging gardens of Basingstoke." The redevelopment has transformed the building into an amazing space of tumbling gardens, and the custom furniture was vital for creating functional, beautiful and durable social areas.
The collection highlights Chris Nangle Furniture's signature use of high-quality, resilient materials. Key pieces include:
Charred green oak seating: a selection of the firm’s signature charred green oak ripple benches and carved single seats, designed for longevity and tactile appeal in the outdoor environment.
Outdoor social spaces: large-scale outdoor tables, benches and stools, featuring durable charred oak tops paired with sleek, powder-coated steel frames.
Bespoke utility: the collection is completed by custom-designed large corner benches which feature integrated, generous pull-out drawer units for convenient storage of gardening equipment, enhancing the practical use of the communal green space.
Working alongside Studio Knight Stokoe on such a visionary project has been incredibly rewarding "Our aim was to complement the stunning architecture and the vibrant planting with furniture that is built to last and provides true functionality."
Outcome
The furniture collection is now a central feature of the Plant redevelopment, offering visitors and residents stylish and durable places to relax, socialise and enjoy the newly realised urban oasis.
