Context

Caledonia Play created and installed two timber play towers surrounded by wood chip safety surfacing at Brodie Castle in the Scottish Highlands.

Challenge

The project remit was to provide an alternative to an existing structure, that would be in-keeping with the woodland setting and provide a challenge for older children (a junior park area was already on site).

Robinia logs and waney-edge boards were used as they retain the natural shape and bends of the tree, ensuring a unique and individual appearance to the tower.

The space was restricted so the design had to take into account the sloping ground and natural obstacles.

Repair work and servicing of the existing equipment was also carried out, and a full RPII inspection and report was provided for the complete site.

Products installed

The 1.8m and 2.5m high towers are linked by a 5m rising rope and timber bridge, and have different access and exit points to both towers, including:

  • Timber ramp with pull rope

  • Arched stainless steel ladder

  • Stainless steel spiral ladder

  • Vertical rock climbing wall

  • Stainless steel slide

  • Stainless steel pipe slide

As the safety surfacing is wood chip, the base of each tower has a ground-level deck to provide a solid platform for younger children to use – as well as adding to tower stability and structural strength.
