Overview

Colchester City Council presented Wicksteed Leisure with an opportunity to refurbish an existing outdoor gym area, initially established to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games.

Wicksteed provided durable outdoor gym equipment that would create a challenging yet inclusive environment, promoting physical, social and creative exercises.

Requirement

To replace all the outdoor gym equipment and safety surfacing with new ones while ensuring they offered the same exercise services as their predecessors.

Work undertaken

Initial assessment

To begin with, Wicksteed conducted a thorough assessment of the site, examining the current equipment and their corresponding exercises. The company also evaluated the site surroundings to determine access points and potential on-site work requirements. Based on its findings, Wicksteed curated a selection of outdoor gym equipment from its FLZ range, aligning with the site's needs.

Proposal

Further discussions with its contracts team led to the development of a comprehensive proposal, which outlined the removal and disposal of all existing equipment.

Additionally, it included the manufacturing, supply and installation of eight new outdoor gym products, along with an instructional sign.

Wicksteed also committed to repairing the wet pour surfacing where items were removed and new ones installed.

Upon submission, the Council approved Wicksteed's proposal, allowing it to proceed with the works.

Work completed

The project was completed before the stipulated deadline, and the finished result comprised a variety of FLZ outdoor gym equipment. This included a sit-up bench, double leg press, chest press / pull-down exercise combo, skier, pull-up bar, dip bar, inclusive hand bike, and cycle.

Outcome

The successful completion of the Adizone outdoor fitness area provided the community with a revamped and inclusive outdoor gym space, encouraging residents to engage in physical activity and promote overall well-being.
