Bespoke corten steel planters green the Edinburgh Trams network
IOTA was commissioned to design and manufacture 59 large bespoke corten steel planters for an extension to the Edinburgh Trams network.
Solution
The 2500 (l) x 950 (w) x 950mm (h) planters are manufactured from 3mm-thick corten steel, supplied pre-weathered. They have been installed to green the streetscapes at the new tram stations – running 4.7km northeast from the city centre at Princes Street, all the way to the Ocean Terminal and the final destination stop of Newhaven.
Background
The contract for the network extension was awarded by Edinburgh Trams to the Sacyr Farrans Neopul (SFN) joint venture, led by Sacyr in partnership with Farrans. The extension represents a total investment of £207m to provide green transport to one of the most densely populated areas of Edinburgh, with the improved connectivity also aimed to attract greater economic development, business, job creation and tourism to the Leith and Newhaven districts.
