IOTA was commissioned to design and manufacture 36 large bespoke powder-coated steel planters for Cala Homes’ new Waterfront Plaza development in Edinburgh.
Solution
The planters have varying dimensions and arrangements, the largest being 3745 (l) x 1500 (w) x 525mm (h). All planters were manufactured from 3mm-thick zintec steel, polyester powder-coated to RAL 7016 [Anthracite grey], and were designed to sit on a concrete pedestal, where the sides of the planter encase the pedestal. A bespoke gusset welded within the planter provides rigidity to the walls whilst enabling fixing the planters to the concrete pad.
Waterside Plaza is laid out as three horseshoe-shaped buildings, each surrounding a community garden on a podium deck above ground floor parking. IOTA’s planters are used to green these focal-point community gardens, which are otherwise laid to artificial turf.
