Context
Wicksteed Playgrounds collaborated with 11-year-old Mia Opoku Agyeman from Northampton to create The Beanstalk Dream at Wicksteed Park in a heartwarming blend of creativity, innovation and community spirit.
Mia's remarkable journey began with a spark of inspiration and a drive to turn her playground dreams into reality. Armed with nothing but determination and a knack for learning, Mia delved into the world of CAD to craft her vision of the ultimate play equipment, which led her to win Wicksteed Park’s, Playground Design Competition in 2023.
Work undertaken
Through numerous consultations with Mia and inviting her to its factory in Kettering, Wicksteed Playgrounds worked hand-in-hand to refine and realise The Beanstalk Dream. Mia's personal touch and creative flair infused every aspect of the project.
The Beanstalk Dream marked the finale of Wicksteed Park's ambitious @play project, supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. On the opening day, Mia had the honour of cutting the ceremonial ribbon herself and took the first exhilarating journey down The Beanstalk.
Outcome
With its ingenious, whimsical features and boasting an impressive rota gen panel that emits the iconic "fee-fi-fo-fum" sound, it pays homage to the classic fairytale, Jack and the Beanstalk, and adds an extra layer of enchantment to the play experience.
As The Beanstalk Dream takes its rightful place among Wicksteed Park's iconic attractions, it stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of play and the boundless potential of collaboration. From Mia's inspired vision to the skilled craftsmanship of Wicksteed Playgrounds' team, this project exemplifies the magic that happens when dreams take flight.
Comments
“The whole team here were hugely impressed with Mia’s imaginative design and the story behind it. Our challenge was turning it into a reality and provide an exciting, fun and safe experience for children of all ages to enjoy. We are really pleased with how it has turned out and we hope it meets Mia’s expectations. It has been a joy to collaborate with such a talented young lady and the Wicksteed Park team to bring this concept through to reality.”
