Context

Handspring designed, manufactured and installed a 4m-dia Roundhouse shelter with a sedum roof at West Park in Worthing, having previously installed a 5m-dia version. The latest one includes seats on three sides and cladding on two.

The local council's park team helped to get all of the components and green roof substrate and sedum turf to site, which was quite a trek across a very wet park. The main challenge of the project was with the weather and the reduced hours of daylight.

Project detail

The frame is made from UK-grown Douglas Fir, with mortise and tenoned draw doweled posts and braces and galvanised steel shoes into the ground. Handspring used a no-concrete groundworks approach and so the dug earth from the holes was just put back in, and the parks team will sort out a base and path to the shelter.

The project was initiated by the local Parish Council, and facilitated by Maurice Pierce.
