Challenge
IOTA was commissioned to design, manufacture and install bespoke planters, benching and illuminated cladding for the Mercure Paignton Hotel in Devon.
The company was contracted on the basis of full design and build responsibility.
Scope of works
Full site survey, design, manufacture and installation responsibility for IOTA’s elements.
Design integration with the lighting package (by others), including allowance for LED underlighting, electrical supply boxes, driver boxes, access panels, etc.
Circa. 85 linear metres of structural cladding, to a max height of 800mm, in 130 individually-designed sections. Structural cladding manufactured from 2.0mm 1.4003-grade stainless steel, powder-coated with a corten-effect paint finish, to an application schedule suitable for C3/C4 environments.
Additional, aesthetic, brass cladding to the lighting shadow gaps under all structural cladding, and to all illuminated stair risers. This aesthetic cladding is in 1.5mm brass with a dull polished finish, to be allowed to naturally patinate with age.
The cladding design included details such safety folds (where accessible to the public), and sacrificial sections to allow for on-site tolerance adjustments.
One bespoke 3580 (l) x 2180 (w) x 800mm (h) planter, of complex geometry.
One bespoke 4017 (l) x 2575 (w) x 600mm (h) planter, of complex geometry, including a 1500mm-long benching section of 150 x 70mm FSC hardwood timbers.
