Overview
Woodscape provided bespoke street furniture across the public realm for the Greenwich Peninsula regeneration project.
Context
The project was focused on transforming a derelict post-industrial site, measuring 79 hectares, into an urban community of 35,000 people. This plan will create a significant new piece of London and is the largest project of its kind in Europe, with a total value of £8.4bn.
Project detail
Initially, Woodscape was contracted to provide Jet planters and litter bins for use across the site. As its relationship to the site developed, it also supplied bespoke slatted benches in various sizes and shapes, to suit the environment.
Woodscape joined this project to develop designs, assist in the selection of materials, and maximise the efficient use of the chosen materials. One of the key factors in Woodscape being chosen as a supplier was its ability to manage large and complex projects and still deliver astounding results with entirely bespoke products.
A factor that sets Woodscape apart in its ability to produce complex bespoke work, is its utilisation of 5-axis CNC machines. These machines enable complex pieces of timber to be cut that would take an extremely long time if done using traditional methods.
One of the more interesting and unusual aspects of this installation is the pedestrian bridge, The Tide, that will be approximately 5km when completed.
Another unique aspect of the development is the installation of OPO by BeBox, an immersive, meditative experience inspired by the surrounding environment. This allows people to take a seat and meditate in the beautiful scenery that has been constructed in the redevelopment.
Outcome
The Greenwich Peninsula, in particular The Tide and the nearby Design District, are examples of contemporary architecture, with a mindful approach to sustainably-sourced street furniture. The timber seating and myriad of other items Woodscape has installed will serve the public for years to come and provide the classy, yet understated appearance that they are known for.
