Cyclepods delivered a new secure cycle hub for residents and commuters in the London Borough of Hammersmith.

The project, led by Hammersmith and Fulham London Borough Council, is the first cycle hub in the area and is intended to encourage cleaner and more sustainable travel to improve the environment, air quality and people’s health.

Project detail

The new hub provides over 80 cycle parking spaces as well as additional bays for larger cargo bikes. In order to guarantee the highest level of security, Diamond Sold Secure accredited Streetpods were installed, which offer the highest level of security and are the most secure bike racks in the UK. 

In addition, the hub has its own CCTV that is linked to the Council’s extensive CCTV network, which means the hub is monitored in real time, at all times, to prevent any issues with misuse or thieves, giving users full confidence. 

The hub can be accessed using an app which will be free for the first year to encourage as many users as possible.

Further additions of a bike repair station and a cycle lock rack were included to allow cyclists to make minor repairs to their bikes and pump up tyres as well as storing bulky bike locks.

Outcome

The cycle hub sits on a once unused space beneath the Hammersmith Flyover next to Hammersmith Broadway tube station and has brought new cyclists to the area from south of the river who are now cycling to Hammersmith for their onwards journey to the get the tube or bus. 

Cycle hubs are an integral part of encouraging cycling in urban areas; the additional level of security and shelter play a large part in the decision to venture out on bikes and gives cyclists confidence that their bikes are much safer than on a standard outdoor cycle stand.
