Overview

Jacksons' Barbican® Imperial railings and a double-leaf swing gate were installed at St Saviour's CofE Church, a listed building in Luton, as part of its safeguarding policy to maintain a safer environment for all.

Challenge

The Church faced problems with crime, people trying to access the rear of the building, and also windows being broken. As part of its safeguarding policy the church states that "the Church will take appropriate steps to maintain a safer environment for all".

There was no fencing around the rear entrance, apart from some pedestrian railings to help with accessibility. To increase safety and security for the buildings, and people attending the Church, security fencing was required. Due to it being a listed building, and also needing to be welcoming for the regular congregation and newcomers, the security solution needed to complement the sensitivity of the site and visually blend into the local environment.

Solution

Railings

The Church opted for Barbican® Imperial railings with ball top finials. The pales protrude through the top rail but do not create a pointed or spiked top, therefore this type of fence is ideal for providing protection against climbing without creating a hostile environment. With welded pale-through-rail construction, concealed fixings, and anti-vandal, hidden panel-to-post connectors, the fence provides good resistance to vandalism. Its design mimics traditional wrought iron railings, but with a modern, tubular construction; a strong, robust fencing solution.

Gate

A matching double-leaf gate was also installed to provide pedestrian and vehicular access and make the space feel unrestricted during opening hours.

Finish

To create a smart appearance and to continue the authentic traditional iron railing appearance that has been protecting churches since the 18th century, the fencing and gate were polyester powder-coated black. Jacksons' architectural grade powder provides a durable coating that does not chip or crack like traditional paint, which generally needs repainting every year.

Guarantee

The fencing and gate were supplied with Jacksons' standard 25 year service life guarantee against rust, corrosion and manufacturing defects, offering a more sustainable solution and reducing costs associated with repairs and replacements.
