Context

Owned and managed by the UK Atomic Energy Authority, Culham Science Centre combines publicly funded research into fusion power and innovation in science with commercial technology to provide a powerhouse of high-tech enterprise in Oxfordshire.

The newly developed fusion building opened in October 2022. It houses employees working in UKAEA’s H3AT, Fusion Technology and STEP (Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production) departments. Fusion promises to be a safe, low carbon and sustainable part of the world’s future energy supply.

Requirement

As part of the main entrance design, a social seating and outdoor dining area was required for scientists and staff to network and relax during their lunch breaks.

Solution

RailRoad Delta tables and matching benches were the perfect solution, manufactured from triple processed recycled steel and topped with FSC iroko timber slats with UV protection to maintain their colouration over time. We modified our FERN planters to incorporate integrated benches that were placed adjacent to the picnic tables and around the perimeter of the new building - bringing greenery to the new hard landscape - contributing to a positive impact on wellbeing for staff.

A peaceful outdoor space for people to rest, socialise, and work outdoors is a welcomed addition to the building.
