Context

Benchmark was tasked with providing robust yet aesthetically-pleasing stainless steel street furniture as part of the transformation of Maindy Park in Cardiff.

Project detail

Benchmark manufactured a number of picnic sets from its Baseline range, which fan out across the play area. Produced in 316 stainless steel these picnic tables and benches are very durable, require little-to-no maintenance, and are 100% recyclable.

On the quieter side of the park the designer wanted something to engage everyone from the community, so some smaller seating areas where created. These consist of round stainless steel tables, laser-etched with a chess board, with stools placed either side. This also meant wheelchair access could be achieved.

Outcome

Cardiff Council Park Services, working with Creative Exeter Solutions and Gerald Davies Ltd, has transformed the park into something all of the community can enjoy. The space now consists of a larger playground encircled with a green and well-planted border walk.

Over all, this once neglected park has been completely transformed through clever design and well thought-out materials choices.
