Overview

Terrabase Classic resin bound surfacing has been used to renovate pathways at the world-famous Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh, a leading centre of excellence in plant science, conservation horticulture and education in Scotland.

Set in over 70 acres of beautiful landscape one mile north of the city centre, the garden offers panoramic views of the city skyline featuring Edinburgh Castle and is a popular tourist destination.

Requirement

The client wanted to renovate the compacted granular pathway network that meanders through the Rock Garden area. Designed in 1914, this area has continued throughout its development to be one of the most popular areas within the Garden. The requirement was for a porous, durable, natural aggregate paving option that would be easy to maintain and blend in with the surrounding borders.

Solution

Addagrip approved contractor Resarf was invited by main contractor J.Sives Surfacing to install 315m2 of Terrabase Classic, a no-dig resin bound permeable paving system using a natural aggregate finish that does not require an asphalt or concrete base. The existing gravel pathways were in good condition and well compacted to allow a direct overlay with the patented Terrabase system. The installation was  finished with a Stonebound resin bound permeable surface in a 6mm Cocoa blend.

Result

Great care was taken to tie in with the perimeter rock formation and plantation areas. The finished walkways provide a natural looking, durable, and easily maintained surface for the garden with excellent permeability to ensure good drainage into the base and surrounding planting areas.

The installation was completed over 5 days at the end of October 2022.
