Tapestry Design used Meadowmat wildflower turf alongside new landscaping and patio areas for a large-scale garden project.

Requirement

This period thatched cottage sits in the centre of a large garden which nestles into the Essex countryside. The owners had added an extension to the rear of the property and wanted to improve the landscaping. The aim of this rural garden design was to:

  • open up the views from inside the property
  • make the garden more interesting, inviting and usable
  • add value should the owners ever wish to sell

Project detail

The traditional country cottage is at least 300 years old and bursting with character, including a thatched roof and butter-coloured walls. Surrounding the property is a generous-sized plot overlooking paddocks and farmland. 

The well-maintained garden had no space to sit or play, nor was there anything to support the wildlife that the owners would expect to find around a property like this. 

One of the reasons for the original planting being minimised was rabbits, which have voracious appetites for soft garden plants. Tapestry Design‘s planting plan used a simple palette of very robust plants, with scented shrubs lining the path to the front door. The slope between the patio terrace and the informal lawn is stabilised by Meadowmat, a pre-planted wildflower turf which is very low maintenance. Standard bay trees give height and rhythm to the garden.
