The pedestrian space for the Daubney Road residences has been designed as a bound permeable pavement using granite setts and fully permeable 10mm joints.
Surface water infiltrates the tuffflow permeable mortar joints, draining into a permeable granular stone base, via tuffbed 2-pack SuDS Type35 permeable bedding mortar. The surface water is then directed into a system of below-ground attenuation units from where it is gradually released into the main surface water drainage system.
A polypropylene tensile mesh has been included in the pavement structure, placed over the stone base prior to construction of the surface course. The mesh minimises the risk of cracking caused by shrinkage, as well as extending the distance between movement joints and therefore the number of movement joints needed.
Hackney Council has taken an innovative approach to pavement design for this residential development.
By making use of the latest techniques and materials the designers have created a bound permeable pedestrian surface which is low maintenance, highly durable and more attractive than would have been possible using unbound, pre-cast concrete block paving typically laid in a herringbone pattern.
Elements used: Cropped granite setts 100 x 100 x 100 mm
