Challenge

Benchmark was contacted by Clarks Contractors to design and manufacture a number of curved stainless steel benches for the new bus station in Cumnock.

East Ayrshire Council has completely renewed the old site with an entire new station and surrounding landscape. The impressive station, designed by Wylie Shanks Architects, provided a practical yet aesthetically interesting building. To add some continuity to the externals Benchmark was asked to help create some equally interesting street furniture.

Solution

The proposed landscape plans included sweeping concrete plinths with benches mounted on top that matched the same radius.

Benchmark's standard curved CL010 seat design seemed to fit in with the architect's overall concept and, after some discussion, a few modifications to the design were made to give a more contemporary look. Within a couple of hours of the initial enquiry 3D renders had been produced and submitted to the client for approval.

The new seat comprises of 316 stainless steel tubes that can be curved to any radius either as freestanding units or, as in this case, wall-mounted. Armrests can be added at any point and allow for multiple seating options.
