Context

IOTA supplied 37 stainless steel conical-shaped planters in different heights for Quakers Friars, a newly redeveloped area of Bristol's shopping district.

The area incorporates the original Blackfriars Priory and other historic and listed buildings in the quarter. It features a European-style piazza as the centrepiece to an array of shops and restaurants, many of which have outdoor dining terraces, and the pedestrianised development reaches out along adjoining streets and squares.

Products supplied

All 37 planters were supplied with channels in the base to allow them to be moved by pallet truck. 1.4003-grade stainless steel was used – a grade of stainless steel which offers significant benefits for use in public realm. The planters were powder-coated in Interpon YX355F Mars Sable, which looks similar to corten steel.

Smaller terracotta planters were sourced from others.

Outcome

Clusters of different sized planters have been brightly and informally-planted and placed throughout the development, contributing significantly to the sense of place. Informal seating and tables are grouped with the planters, encouraging visitors to meet up and linger, and helping create a relaxed but buzzy atmosphere.
