Requirement

In August 2015, the RNLI opened their own boat building facility, the All-weather Lifeboat Centre (ALC) in Poole, Dorset. The centre is the RNLI's first state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for over 40 years, bringing every stage of the lifeboat building process in-house and under one roof, including the construction, repair and maintenance of lifeboats.

The ALC features two boat halls for manufacturing and maintenance, a component manufacturing area, a launch, recovery, and boat storage area, a paint preparation area, a training workshop, office facilities, tool storage, and a visitors' viewing area.

Given the critical nature of the work carried out there, it was essential that the perimeter of the site was properly secured with appropriate fencing and gates.

Solution

Jacksons has been working with and providing the RNLI with security, demarcation, gates, and access control solutions for over 20 years to various facilities across the UK. To secure the newly built ALC in 2015, the company supplied over 43m of 2m high Barbican® fencing, and over 312m of 2.5m high Barbican® fencing, and a number of gates ranging from 1m wide pedestrian swing gates, to 4.6m and 7.5m wide automated cantilever sliding gates.

The latest project for this site was to supply and install an unequal pair of 2.5m high Barbican® cantilever sliding gates, with one 5m leaf and one 3m leaf, bolted onto concrete bases cast by Jacksons. In addition, approximately 3m of Barbican® fencing was installed to infill gaps around the gates.

Barbican® is Jacksons' alternative to triple point palisade fencing, and has a welded pale-through-rail construction, with tamper proof bolts and hidden panel-to-post connectors. Manufactured from premium steel which is hot dip galvanised inside and out, it provides lasting protection against corrosion and rust. The fencing and gates were additionally powder coated at our own powder coating plant on site in RAL Blue 5013. Powder coating gives the fencing a glossy, durable finish that will not chip or crack like traditional painting.
