Aim

Broadbent Studio was tasked with creating a physical memorial to the legacy of Bradford Pit, within the area of the original site, that highlights the wider Bradford Pit Project and its unique process of engagement and layers of collaboration in the 7-year journey to completion.

Concept

The physical memorial structure represents a lift shaft cage. It allows the viewer to imagine being lowered into a subterranean world below the streets of Manchester, and helps to recognise the history and legacy of the site.

The final design features drawings from former MMU illustration student Jacob Phillips; graphic design in the map is by academic Jonathan Hitchen.

The Miners Group has been central to this development process, participating in multigenerational workshops with their end goal always being a memorial sited at the former pit head.
