Challenge

Eastside Quarter is a development of new apartments in Bexleyheath, south London. The scheme provides over 500 new homes for the area and features car parking facilities, a concierge service, gym, residential podium, and roof gardens spread over two high-rise blocks with social spaces and retail shops.

The rooftop gardens are situated on different levels across the two buildings to provide much-needed green space for this urban development, as well as a spectacular view across London for residents to enjoy.

Furnitubes worked with the landscape contractors to provide landscaping solutions and project management for the rooftop development on both blocks (A and B) of Eastside Quarter.

Presented with the common challenge of transporting to the rooftops, the project also required A fire-rated freestanding planters to be installed as part of the rooftop design.

Solution

Furnitubes designed and manufactured a number of AKRI retaining steel wall planters with ped and tray system to negate the issues of the rooftop being A-fire rated.

AKRI, manufactured from recycled steel, was the ideal solution for the roof-top scheme; the lightweight panels were easily transported and installed on-site.

The AKRI tray and ped system is a unique offering as it has been designed to fit the dimensions of and support each planter individually, creating a self-contained planter while still allowing for drainage.

AKRI’s ped and tray system also allow the planters to be left freestanding, sitting on a layer of waterproof membrane.

Decking and pergolas were installed and benches were later retro-fitted to the planters to seamlessly integrate seating, manufactured in all steel to accommodate the required A fire rating, creating stunning landscaped rooftops across both buildings in the heart of a bustling city.
