Ashwell Primary School in North Hertfordshire had a requirement to improve its outdoor space, and asked Setter Play to create a canopy shelter that would wrap around the school building and provide shelter and shade for some of the main thoroughfares through the school grounds.
Bespoke canopies have been one of Setter Play's specialities for almost 25 years, and this project is an excellent example of the use of a glulam beam canopy.
Curved glulam beams are used to create a graceful and elegant structure that stands out. A polycarbonate roofing system provides protection against both the sun and rain, and ensure the outdoor space remains accessible all year round for pupils and teachers.
For the ground area, Setter Play created a ‘stream’ of blue wetpour which winds its way through the space, with patches of green and yellow to emulate fields and sands - all of which helps spark pupils’ imaginations.
At the front of their school a new tarmac surfacing was also installed, leading up to the main entrance.
