Challenge

ASF were asked if it was possible to produce the ASF 502 cast iron and timber seat in 3m lengths for Coach Street in Skipton, as opposed to the usual 1.8m span.

Using just 2 seat ends with an internal timber span of just short of 3m would have meant the timbers would have been too springy, unstable and at risk of breaking once installed.

Solution

ASF proposed using a centre leg and arm casting to produce a double seat with 2 seat pans at 1.5m each.

This system allows ASF to manufacture the seats to any length, as centre castings can be added time and time again to produce longer and longer castings.

If timber ends are mitred instead of being cut square, this system would also allow faceted seating, or geometric seating shapes such as hexagonal seats.

Curved timbers using this system would allow seating to be manufactured curved or circular.
