Context

ZSL London Zoo created a brand-new Animal Adventure Zone which gives young visitors the opportunity to meet a range of animals and learn about their lives in the wild.

The new area features low barriers designed to allow youngsters to view the animals, an exciting play area with a water splash zone and catering kiosk.

Product supplied

Addagrip approved contractor Limegate Ltd installed over 600m2 of BBA-approved Addaset resin bound paving to create a low-maintenance, decorative surface for the new zone, developed following the devastating fire in 2017 which sadly resulted in the death of an aardvark and four meerkats.

The challenge was to provide a robust surface with a seamless finish in an area that also included existing trees, requiring a non-invasive base to accommodate tree roots and ensure maximum porosity. The solution was to install a 6mm Addaset Pecan blend onto the asphalt base for the pedestrian areas and lay the same colour as a 10mm Terrabase Classic onto a compacted Type 3 around the trees, achieving a continuous finish across the entire zone.

Outcome

Work was completed in time for the opening of the new Animal Adventure Zone on the 1st August 2019.

The result is a decorative, smooth, seamless surface which can be easily maintained and is perfect for the zoo environment.
