Context

Addagrip approved contractor Total Protection (GB) Ltd was appointed by Phelan Construction Ltd to reconstruct a courtyard and footpaths at the University of Essex in Southend.

Challenge

The university needed to replace areas of old resin bonded gravel surfacing which were showing signs of wear and tear and general ageing. Due to the limited access to the areas to be resurfaced, the size of the machinery and equipment normally used for this type of project was restricted, but the challenge was overcome successfully.

Solution

It was decided to remove and replace nearly 600m2 of the bonded material with BBA-certified Terrabound resin-bound surfacing to provide a hard-wearing, low-maintenance, decorative paving with a long lifespan suitable for this busy campus. Once the existing bonded surface removed and made good, the new Terrabound surfacing was installed in a 3mm Trent blend together with 53 linear metres of movement joint detail.

Outcome

Work was completed in July 2019.

The Terrabound Trent blend suits the vibrant exterior of the campus buildings providing a bright and welcoming low-maintenance space.
